The Best Food You're Not Eating: CSULB's Chartroom

One of Cal State Long Beach's best kept secrets is the fine dining experience available from within the University Dining Plaza at Chef Ambrocia Ramirez and Executive Chef Jim Cacciatore's buffet style restaurant, The Chartroom.

Except, it's not a secret. Most students know it's there; they just don't know what it is, or what they're missing out on.

"I pass it everyday, but in four years I've never ventured inside. It seems kind of exclusive; to fancy and time consuming for a school day lunch," senior communications major Teandra Johnston said.

The Chartroom charges a flat rate of $9.95 per person for an all-you-can eat salad bar, a main course, drinks, and dessert. For what get, most patrons find the price to be a steal. A salad bar/drink/dessert option is also available, for those looking for a lighter option.

"I try to eat there a few times a semester, just because I like to try their new main course items. I stumbled upon The Chartroom when one of my friends said her artwork was on display inside. Some of the best grilled fish in Long Beach is at The Chartroom, and their roasted chicken is always tender and juicy," Alma Montanerro, a junior interior design major said, after her most recent meal at the campus oasis.

Menu offerings range from curry-rubbed grilled fish to chicken fajitas to Italian beef, and always include a soup of the day. Vegetarian dishes are also available, like an Indian- spiced eggplant dish or various pasta, bean and vegetable meals.

The Chartroom is open Mon.-Fri. from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. Their menus are posted weekly on the CSULB website, and reservations or more information is available at (562) 985-4090.
