Sbarro's Brand Named in US News List of businesses in Trouble

The brand name of one of Cal State's newest restaurant faces may be in trouble, according to a recent US News list of companies at risk.

The list named the Sbarro's pizza as one of 15 firms that might not survive 2009 due to the fact that many of the company's locations are in shopping malls where customer traffic is on the decline and the lack of revenue boosting options like breakfast or late night menus available to competitors.

The CSULB location has experienced some difficulty since it's fall 2008 opening, but Manager Fernando Rivera remains optimistic.

"It's not what we expected, but we're doing what we need to do to keep business up. We've reduced our prices and added daily specials, and it's helped so far. It's a tough time for everyone, but I'm not fearing for the future of the company yet," Rivera said.

Sbarro's is located on the second floor of the University Student Union next to the Wells Fargo Bank, and is currently offering a "Happy Hour" promotion on weekdays from 5:30 p.m -8:00 p.m. and an early morning drink or bread stick special with the purchase of any entree.

Beach Club card acceptance widening; still not universal on campus.

Every CSULB student is required to have a student I.D. card, but did everyone actually bother to read the information they include about the Beach Club Card?!
The Beach Club allows students and/or parents to make deposits to the student's Beach Club account to be used in various locations on and off campus.

Participating On-Campus Locations Include:

-University Bookstore
-University Art Store

Noticeably absent from the list are Robeks, The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, Sbarros, and Subway. But with the exception of a sub-sandwich, there are similar Beach Club-accepting businesses on the list.

Robeks Juice Bar

Now comes the exciting part! Check out all the off-campus locations accepting Beach Club credits:

More off-campus businesses are expected to follow the trend in the fall 2009 semester, including Frogurtz Yogurt Bar on 7th street and Park. Would anyone else like to see Cha for Tea on this list?

Most surprsing and impressive on this list are the 2nd street bars and pubs, who seem to know a golden opportunity when they see one. Most avid Beach Club users are students whose parents regularly make deposits to their accounts; so why not spend it at your favorite Irish pub or sports bar in Belmont Shore?

The Nugget to host Controversial BLR Event

In the string of controversies surrounding the Beach Legacy Referendum proposal to increase student fees to increase funding in the athletic department, on campus grill and bar The Nugget is finding itself the latest target of anti-BLR groups on campus.

The restaurant has encountered criticism in the form of flyers and boycotts following their scheduling of the BLR organizing committee's after-voting party and concert on Thursday, March 12.

Forty-Niner Shops, Inc. says that their restaurant hosting the event does not make them sponsors of the referendum, and that the party organizers paid to have the event in their facility. They declined to comment on their position on the referendum itself and declared themselves open to reservations from other groups, regardless of their stance, provided it would be a reasonable and peaceful event.

Campus Outpost opens on Lower Campus

Delay after delay forced students and staff to settle for taco trucks, vending machines, or a long hike to any dining services from lower campus locations like the engineering complex, social sciences/public administration building, health and human services complex, and others.

Junior engineering major Andrew Sampson described his experiences in the fall 2008 semester as stressful. "My classes were too close together time wise to be able to go all the way up to the student union. I had to get snacks out of the vending machine because I didn't want to eat out of the roach coaches they were parking outside."

The campus outpost convenience store is stocked with pre-made meals, soups, snacks, office supplies, and the latest Beach gear, while the Outpost Grill gives customers hot breakfast, lunch and dinner options.
